Managing Impasse in Mediation:
Embracing Entrenched Energy to Reframe Opportunities
Impasse is a natural and often predictable expression of the challenges facing people engaged in entrenched disputes. As such, mediators should view it as a normal element of the process, one that offers unique opportunities for the parties to engage in meaningful exploration of their underlying concerns and, as a result, to seek new opportunities for creative, meaningful, durable solutions that address both substantive and relational needs of the conflict.
Harry Webne-Behrman will lead a conversation about impasse and how mediators can utilize its fascinating dynamics to assist disputing parties in their efforts to navigate it.
Harry Webne-Behrman is Senior Partner at Collaborative Initiative, Inc., a dispute resolution and consulting firm based in Madison, Wisconsin. For nearly 25 years, Harry has been engaged as a professional mediator, focusing on disputes within workplaces and other organizations, public policy, and community issues. Along with his partner, Lisa Webne-Behrman, he has developed and offered hundreds of training programs in conflict resolution, consensus building, facilitation, and related areas.
Harry also serves as Training Officer for the UW-Madison Office of Human Resource Development, where he teaches similar courses and also coordinates a wide array of professional development programs that seek to engage staff in meaningful, collaborative efforts.
The author of several books and articles on mediation and facilitation, Harry was honored by WAM with its Distinguished Service Award in November 2006. Harry Webne-Behrman's excellent presentation is free to all members. Please sign up now!
